About Me

Dixie sleeping2

Education and Organizations

I earned my undergraduate degree in psychology in 2003 and my graduate degree in clinical social work in 2008 from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virginia.

I am an active member of the North Carolina Society for Clinical Social Work where I serve on the board as Mentor Committee Chair.

Background

A native of Virginia, I was raised on the Chesapeake Bay in the Tidewater region, and am an avid waterwoman. In 2009 I moved to Raleigh, NC, where I reside with my Great Danes, Tucker and Dixie Bird. Tucker is in training to be a therapy dog and at three years old weighs in so far at 207 pounds. His favorite activity is carrying his stuffed seal up and down the stairs. Dixie Bird is eight and not in training to be anything. She is far too busy taking naps (see above- she’s hard at work). I love to read and welcome any and all literature suggestions from my clients. I will also dispense free book recommendations to anyone who asks, and also to those who do not ask.

What Kind of Therapist Am I?

I have been working in clinical practice for fourteen years in a variety of settings, and I work with children, adolescents, and adults.

I enjoy working with families and couples, and welcome any and all orientations and gender identities.

My clinical style is to focus on the family as one living, breathing organism that needs to function as a team to remain healthy; therefore I invite family members together into session so everyone is involved. I do not work with children or adolescents without the involvement of their parents or guardians, because if the thumb is injured the entire body feels the pain.

Have you been struggling with your child’s behavior and feeling exasperated, defeated, frustrated, and confused?
It just didn’t feel like kids acted like this when you were growing up! Why does parenting look so different for this generation? Are my friends doing it right? Am I? I love my kid, but seriously, I can’t live with them behaving like this- where do I turn?

It can feel like you are all alone, swimming against the current, with no support and no guidebook to create change.

What I offer is the guidebook. Together we will identify parental roles, effective disciplinary approaches, and problem-maintaining behaviors. We will work together on creating change and help you achieve what you are looking for in therapy.

But what about those of you who are not parents, and who are looking for a therapist to help in other areas?

I can help find strategies to overcome depression, anxiety, social isolation and loneliness, relationship challenges, professional dissatisfaction, and family dysfunction.

I can listen. And support you. You are not alone.

If this sounds like what you have been looking for, email me and let’s set up a consultation. If you don’t storm out after the first meeting then we can meet again and really get the show on the road.
